NEW YORK — The Philippine Trade and Investment Center–New York (PTIC-NY), in partnership with STEMEd Philippines, Inc. and the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP) led by Mr. Michael Tiu Lim, successfully hosted an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Roundtable at the Philippine Center in New York. The event convened industry leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, and innovators to discuss the future of digital transformation, education, and economic development in the Philippines.
As the national organization of ICT councils across the Philippines, NICP promotes inclusive ICT growth by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, strengthening the country’s talent pool, improving the business ecosystem, and advocating for policies that enable a thriving digital economy. Through its efforts to establish international ICT councils in major global cities such as New York, NICP aims to connect Filipino ICT initiatives with international markets and investment opportunities.
The roundtable gathered a diverse group of professionals who exchanged insights on cultural alignment, bridging education and industry, and harnessing technology for inclusive growth. Discussions highlighted the importance of aligning STEM and ICT education programs with current market demands; expanding ICT and BPO operations beyond major urban centers; leveraging fintech and satellite technologies to enhance rural connectivity; and using digital tools to strengthen agricultural productivity.
Participants also emphasized the need to strengthen the Philippine startup ecosystem, support rural development, and prepare the workforce for AI-driven transformations in the global labor market—particularly within the country’s fast-evolving BPO sector.
Ambassador Mario de Leon (Ret.), Chief Strategy Officer of STEMEd Philippines, underscored the organization’s mission to empower the next generation through education and connectivity. “STEMEd doesn’t only provide connectivity in underserved areas—it opens pathways to the future,” he said. “By engaging marginalized students, it aims to inspire young minds to pursue STEM careers and build a strong national talent pool of innovators who will drive sustainable development.”
Meanwhile, Engr. Roger Alama, Chief Operations Officer of STEMEd Philippines, reaffirmed the crucial role of STEM education in shaping the nation’s technological future. “STEM education is the foundation of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and innovation,” he noted. “It equips young minds with the skills to develop tools and technologies that will serve society and future generations.”
