U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) on Tuesday expressed condolences following a deadly ferry disaster in the southern Philippines that killed multiple passengers and triggered an extensive search-and-rescue operation.

In a statement, Meng said she was “absolutely heartbroken” by the tragedy and extended her sympathies to the victims and their families.

“This is an awful and devastating tragedy,” Meng said. “I am praying for all who have been impacted and I send my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones. Thank you to all the rescue workers who worked to save lives.”

Details of the Incident

The ferry, which was traveling between islands in the southern Philippines, encountered trouble while at sea and later sank, according to Philippine authorities. The vessel was carrying hundreds of passengers and crew members at the time of the incident.

Rescue teams from the Philippine Coast Guard, Navy, and local government units launched a large-scale response, deploying ships, aircraft, and civilian boats to search for survivors. Many passengers were rescued, while others were pulled from the water after hours at sea.

As of the latest official reports, at least 18 people have been confirmed dead, with several others still missing. Authorities say rescue and recovery operations are continuing as conditions allow.

Investigation Underway

Philippine officials have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the ferry’s sinking. Initial reports suggest possible mechanical issues, though weather conditions and vessel safety compliance are also being examined.

In response to the incident, regulators temporarily suspended operations of the ferry operator’s fleet pending safety inspections, underscoring renewed concerns over maritime safety in the country.

Broader Context

Ferries are a primary mode of transportation in the Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands. While vital to daily travel and commerce, maritime accidents remain a recurring concern, often linked to overcrowding, aging vessels, and rough sea conditions.

International reactions have followed the disaster, with officials and lawmakers abroad, including Meng, expressing solidarity with the Philippine people as recovery efforts continue.

Philippine authorities say they will provide further updates as search operations proceed and the investigation develops.
