The Durham Regional Police Service is mourning the tragic loss of Filipino Canadian Constable in Training (CIT) Tyrone Magbitang, 27, who was killed in a motor vehicle collision on July 7, 2026, while traveling to the Ontario Police College.

According to police, Magbitang and another recruit were driving to the Ontario Police College in Malahide Township when their sedan collided with a transport truck late Tuesday morning. Authorities said Magbitang was behind the wheel. He died at the scene, while the second recruit suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. The truck driver was not injured.

Magbitang joined the Durham Regional Police Service as a Special Constable in May 2023. In April 2026, he was selected as a police constable recruit, moving one step closer to fulfilling his lifelong dream of serving his community as a police officer.

A graduate of Durham College's Police Foundations program, Magbitang was remembered by colleagues as a compassionate, humble, and dedicated public servant who was deeply committed to helping others. Police said his professionalism, kindness, and positive attitude left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him, despite his promising career being cut tragically short.

On Wednesday, Magbitang's body will be escorted from London, Ontario, to the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto by family members and fellow Durham Regional Police officers in a ceremonial procession honoring his dedication, service, and commitment to the profession he aspired to join.

The Durham Regional Police Service extended its deepest condolences to Tyrone Magbitang's family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones as they mourn his untimely passing, and asked the public to respect the family's privacy during this difficult time.
