A violent 2021 assault case involving missing Filipino-American mother Antoinette Forbes has resurfaced as authorities continue searching for the 53-year-old mother, while her former partner and the father of her 10-year-old son remains in custody in Pennsylvania.

Russell Ashford, 65, was arrested in Pennsylvania on a Maryland warrant alleging a probation violation connected to his earlier assault case involving Forbes.

Court records show that Ashford pleaded guilty to first-degree assault following a violent 2021 incident involving Forbes at a home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

According to court documents, a neighbor intervened during the attack after hearing a disturbance and witnessed Ashford striking Forbes while she was on the floor.

Forbes suffered extensive injuries during the assault, including fractures and injuries to her face, eye and hand. Prosecutors later said some of her injuries were permanent, including partial loss of vision in her right eye.

Ashford was sentenced to 15 years, with all but nine months suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation.

Court case later changed

The legal status of the assault case subsequently changed.

Ashford sought probation before judgment, and a judge granted the request in July 2026. The earlier finding of guilt was struck, while Ashford remained subject to probation conditions.

New alleged probation violation

Ashford's current detention stems from a separate incident involving his son at a summer camp at American University in Washington.

Authorities allege that Ashford attempted to see or pick up his son from the camp in July despite restrictions concerning contact.

Court documents allege that Ashford became agitated during the encounter with camp personnel.

Authorities subsequently sought a warrant alleging that his conduct violated the conditions of his probation.

The alleged probation violation remains pending and has not been established as a final court finding.

Arrested in Pennsylvania

Ashford was taken into custody during a traffic stop in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, on September 12.

Authorities used license-plate reader information while tracking his vehicle before the stop.

His and Forbes' 10-year-old son was with him when he was taken into custody.

Authorities said the child was safe and unharmed and was later released to a family member.

Ashford was taken to the Beaver County Jail while awaiting further proceedings involving the Maryland warrant.

Forbes remains missing

Forbes has been missing since September 4, when she was last seen in the 3200 block of Nebraska Avenue NW in Washington, D.C.

Her disappearance has raised concern among relatives and friends because several important personal belongings were reportedly left behind.

Her phones, wallet and keys were found at her residence, while her vehicle remained outside and her dog was also at the home.

Family members have said the circumstances are highly unusual and have appealed to the public for information that could help investigators locate her.

No charge linking Ashford to disappearance

Despite the history of violence between Forbes and Ashford and his current detention, there is an important legal distinction: Ashford has not been charged with any crime related to Antoinette Forbes' disappearance.

Authorities have also not publicly identified him as a suspect in the missing-person investigation.

His current detention concerns an alleged probation violation associated with the earlier assault case, not a charge involving Forbes' disappearance.

Forbes remains missing as authorities continue investigating what happened to her.
