Alex Eala quietly returns to Philippines after New York Fashion Week

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala quietly returned to the Philippines on the evening of September 13, arriving at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 without the usual fanfare surrounding one of the country’s biggest sports stars.

According to Abante News Online, Eala arrived shortly after 9 p.m. after traveling from Japan aboard a Nippon Air flight. She was seen leaving the airport quietly, with no major welcoming ceremony or public announcement of her arrival.

Her homecoming comes as attention grows over possible penalties she could face from the Women’s Tennis Associationafter reportedly choosing to skip the China Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, in order to represent the Philippines at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

Reports have indicated that Eala could potentially face a $10,000 fine, equivalent to roughly ₱627,000, depending on how WTA rules are applied.

The issue has now reached the Philippine Senate.

Sen. Erwin Tulfo raised Eala’s situation in a privilege speech, arguing that the government should consider supporting the tennis star if she is penalized for prioritizing national duty.

“If she is fined because she chose to represent the Philippines, shouldn’t the government extend help or support to her?” Tulfo said.

The senator urged the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and other government agencies to explore legal and appropriate ways to assist Eala should penalties be imposed.

Eala’s decision has drawn attention because it highlights the difficult choice elite athletes can face between professional tour commitments and representing their country in major international competitions.

For many Filipino supporters, however, Eala’s decision to wear the Philippine colors at the Asian Games is being viewed as another sign of her commitment to representing the country on the international stage.
