Once considered a sleeping paradise on the Pacific coast, Northern Samar is finally waking up—and the world is beginning to take notice.
Tucked away in the eastern reaches of the Philippines, this island province has long been known only to locals and a few off-the-beaten-path travelers. But now, with its pristine marine sanctuaries, untouched beaches, and rich cultural identity, Northern Samar is emerging as a must-visit destination—particularly for those with a taste for adventure, authenticity, and a deep love for the sea.
Beneath the Surface: A Freediving Frontier
The island’s journey to the tourism map began where most wouldn’t expect—below sea level.
A group of passionate freedivers from NoFins Free Diver Ph. started exploring Northern Samar’s waters, traveling from island to island, diving into caves, lagoons, and coral reefs that had never been formally documented. Their footage—shared online—offered glimpses of an underwater world so raw and mesmerizing it could rival the most popular dive sites in Southeast Asia.
Among the first to take notice was Jose C. Jose, Jr., a Molchanovs Freediving Instructor Trainer. “I hadn’t even gone underwater yet, and I was already in awe. The Blue Lagoon was just stunning,” he said. “Once I dove, I realized—it’s completely untouched.”
The Blue Lagoon, just one of many emerging sites in the province, is now drawing freedivers from across the country and beyond, eager to explore its crystal-clear waters and thriving marine life.

Local Passion Breeds Conservation
What makes Northern Samar’s rise even more inspiring is that much of it is driven by locals. Witness Tugkad Free Diving, a community formed by young professionals who wanted to do more than just dive—they wanted to protect their home.
Started as a grassroots effort, Tugkad is now a respected organization offering professional freediving lessons with an emphasis on sustainability and marine conservation. Their goal is clear: train the next generation of ocean stewards while welcoming visitors who respect the environment.
“Our waters have been beautiful for generations,” one member shared. “Now that the world is watching, we want to make sure they stay that way.”
Beyond the Waves: Nature, Food, and Culture
Of course, you don’t have to be a freediver to fall in love with Northern Samar.
The island province offers sweeping white sand beaches, dramatic coastal cliffs, and waterfalls hidden in lush forests. Fishing villages serve up freshly caught seafood, including the local favorite—kinilaw (Filipino ceviche)—best enjoyed by the beach with a cold coconut in hand.
The island’s magic recently captivated the Miss Universe Philippines candidates, who visited for an official stop. Their glowing posts about Northern Samar’s beauty—from its turquoise lagoons to its savory delicacies—reached thousands of followers and further amplified the province’s growing appeal.

A Future in Balance
Local officials, led by Governor Edwin Ongchuan, are now focused on guiding Northern Samar’s tourism development with care. With community engagement at the heart of their approach, the province is striving to grow in a way that uplifts locals, protects nature, and shares its wonders responsibly with the world.

So whether you're a freediver chasing depth, a traveler searching for hidden escapes, or a culture lover eager to taste something real, Northern Samar offers something rare: a destination that still feels untouched, yet warmly open to those who seek its quiet beauty.
The island may have been a secret once—but today, it’s a story just beginning to unfold.
