MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) continues to intensify as it barrels closer to Luzon, prompting the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to raise multiple Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) across wide areas of Luzon, Visayas, and parts of Mindanao.

Signal No. 4: Catanduanes

PAGASA raised TCWS No. 4 over Catanduanes, warning of winds exceeding 184 km/h within 12 hours. The weather bureau described the situation as “potentially very destructive,” with very heavy to total damage expected to high-risk structures and extensive losses in banana, coconut, rice, and corn plantations. Residents were advised to remain indoors as the province is likely to experience the eye and eyewall of the typhoon.

Signal No. 3: Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas

TCWS No. 3 was hoisted over Aurora, northern and eastern Quezon including the Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, northern and eastern Sorsogon, and portions of Northern Samar. Winds of 89–117 km/h are expected within 18 hours, with heavy damage likely to structures made of light materials. PAGASA warned of widespread power outages, uprooted trees, and major crop damage.

Signal No. 2: Central Luzon to Eastern Visayas

TCWS No. 2 covers a broad area including Mainland Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Cordillera provinces, Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, Metro Manila, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, Batangas, Marinduque, northern Oriental Mindoro, northern Romblon, and parts of Bicol Region. In the Visayas, it includes Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, and northern Biliran. Winds of 62–88 km/h are expected within 24 hours, with light to moderate damage possible to structures and crops.

Signal No. 1: Remaining Areas

TCWS No. 1 remains in effect over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Romblon, Mindoro provinces, Calamian Islands, Cuyo Islands, and portions of Cebu, Negros, Bohol, Leyte, and Northern Mindanao. These areas may experience winds of 39–61 km/h and intermittent rains within 36 hours.

PAGASA and Disaster Agencies on Full Alert

PAGASA warned that Typhoon Uwan’s large diameter covers nearly the entire Philippines, with the potential to cause severe flooding, landslides, and coastal storm surges. Disaster response councils across Luzon and Visayas have been placed on full alert, and preemptive evacuations are underway in high-risk and low-lying communities.

Residents are urged to closely monitor official bulletins, avoid travel and sea activities, and prepare emergency supplies as conditions are expected to worsen throughout the weekend.

Typhoon Uwan entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility early Friday and is forecast to make landfall over northern Luzon between Sunday night and Monday morning, before curving northward toward southern Taiwan.
