For the first time in its history, Northern Samar played host to some of the country’s most elite triathletes during its founding anniversary celebration. The province welcomed the prestigious Ibabao Triathlon, marking a major milestone in its journey to becoming a prime destination for sports tourism.
Held on June 1, 2025, the Ibabao Festival Sunrise Standard Triathlon Recon Race brought the Ironman spirit to the north, attracting over 60 top-tier triathletes, including national record-holders and members of the Philippine Triathlon Team. The event featured a grueling 1.5-kilometer swim off the coast of Sitio Alisyao in Brgy. Makiwalo, Mondragon; a 40-kilometer bike ride along the national highway stretching from Mondragon to Catarman; and a 10-kilometer run that looped around the Northern Samar Capitol Grounds in Brgy. Dalakit.
Among the athletes were rising local talents from the province, many of whom fulfilled a lifelong dream of completing the 51.5-kilometer Olympic-distance triathlon. Their participation underscored the spirit of inclusivity and community, proving that determination and local pride can stand alongside national athletic excellence.
The event was made possible through the unwavering support of Governor Edwin Ongchuan, Vice Governor Clarence Dato, and the Provincial Government of Northern Samar, who continue to champion initiatives that empower youth and promote physical excellence. Their leadership has not only brought national attention to the province but has also inspired a new generation of Nortehanon athletes.
A special highlight of the event was the participation of John Patrick Ciron of Team Go for Gold, who finished first. A promising figure in Philippine triathlon, Ciron recently clinched the gold medal at the 2025 World Triathlon Development Regional Cup in Vietnam, completing the duathlon event with an impressive time of 1:01:30. His recent victories include winning the 2024 New Clark City Duathlon and taking home the silver medal at the 2024 Powerman Malaysia—solidifying his status as one of the country’s top multisport athletes.
Also shining on race day was Erika Kaye Burgos, a Southeast Asian Games gold medalist and proud member of the Philippine Triathlon Team, who emerged as the top female finisher. Her presence lent prestige to the event and served as an inspiration to many young female athletes in the region.
The success of the Ibabao Triathlon not only celebrated the founding of Northern Samar but also served as a launchpad for the province’s vision of becoming a premier hub for competitive sports in the Visayas. The event ignited a renewed sense of pride and possibility among local athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
With this bold step, Northern Samar signals its readiness to host more large-scale sporting events in the future—setting a new standard for provincial athletic programs and reaffirming its place on the national map.
