Former Negros Oriental Representative Arnolfo Teves Jr. is set to be deported from Timor-Leste after being arrested by local immigration authorities. The Timor-Leste government confirmed that Teves is staying in the country without a valid visa, legal authorization, and is using a passport that has been canceled by the Philippine government. His presence is also considered a threat to their national security.
The deportation decision takes immediate effect and is based on Timor-Leste’s national laws on migration and asylum, citing concerns over public order and safety.
In the Philippines, the Department of Justice (DOJ) expressed its readiness to bring Teves back to the country to face trial. He is facing multiple murder charges in connection with the 2023 assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and other related crimes, collectively known as the Pamplona Massacre.
The DOJ welcomed Timor-Leste’s latest stance but noted it is still awaiting clarification on whether Teves will be deported as an undocumented foreigner or extradited under the Philippines’ pending request.
