Strong Geomagnetic Storms Impact Earth as Third Solar Eruption Nears

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in the United States is closely monitoring a series of powerful geomagnetic storms caused by multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun. Two of these solar eruptions have already hit Earth, while a third and potentially stronger CME is expected to arrive around midday, raising global concerns about possible disruptions to communications and power systems.

Experts report that the magnetic field strength linked to the ongoing storm is eight times stronger than normal, producing G4-level (severe) geomagnetic activity on the NOAA space weather scale. A G3 (strong) warning has been extended through 4 p.m. Eastern Time, and a G4 (severe) watch remains in effect as the solar storm continues to intensify.

There is also a moderate chance of a G5 (extreme) event — the highest classification — if the incoming CME’s magnetic field aligns southward with Earth’s magnetic poles. Such an orientation allows greater energy transfer into the planet’s atmosphere, increasing the risk of satellite interference, GPS navigation errors, radio blackouts, and power grid fluctuations across multiple regions.

Scientists note that these geomagnetic storms also create dazzling auroral displays, with the Northern Lights visible much farther south than usual — possibly across parts of Europe, Asia, and North America.

The Space Weather Prediction Center, operated by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), continues to monitor solar activity around the clock and will issue updated alerts as new data emerges.
