Son of Quezon City Vendor Tops PMA Class of 2025, Graduates Summa Cum Laude

From the busy streets of Barangay Batasan Hills in Quezon City to the prestigious grounds of Fort Del Pilar, 23-year-old Cadet First Class Jessie Ticar Jr. has proven that no dream is too distant when fueled by determination and heart. The youngest of four siblings, Ticar has been named valedictorian of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Siklab Laya” Class of 2025 and will graduate summa cum laude—only the fourth cadet in PMA history to earn the rare distinction.

Born into humble beginnings, Ticar grew up watching his mother sell goods on the streets to make ends meet. His father, once a taxi driver, became a person with a disability after falling ill, leaving the family in even more difficult circumstances. But instead of being discouraged, Ticar used their struggles as his fuel.

Even while undergoing the demanding training of a PMA cadet, Ticar made it a point to send home part of his monthly salary and allowances to help support his family. His sense of duty, even before donning the uniform of an officer, was already firmly rooted in love and sacrifice.

Out of 356 graduating cadets—285 male and 71 female—Ticar rose to the top, not only earning the Presidential Saber but also receiving numerous other accolades including the JUSMAG Saber, Gen. Antonio Luna Award, and the Australian Defense Best Overall Performance Award.

Ticar’s story is a powerful reminder that success isn’t defined by where you come from, but by how far you’re willing to go to serve, rise, and inspire. He will stand tall on graduation day, a symbol of hope for every young Filipino dreaming beyond hardship.

The graduation ceremony will take place on May 17 at PMA grounds in Baguio City,

with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expected to attend and confer the honors.
