Lucena City — A 23-day-old baby girl is now safe in government custody after she was allegedly sold twice by her own mother — with the final transaction reaching a shocking price tag of ₱52,000!

The twisted scheme, which involved a registered midwife and a buyer couple from Pagbilao, Quezon, was exposed after the baby’s grandmother courageously reported the crime to authorities.

According to the Lucena City Police, the baby was born on June 3, 2025. Just over two weeks later, on June 21, the mother approached a midwife at a maternity and birthing clinic in Lucena, asking for help to find someone to adopt — or buy — her newborn.

The midwife allegedly introduced the desperate mother to a couple — a 39-year-old coal plant worker and his 37-year-old wife, a safety officer, both residents of Pagbilao.

That same day, the first deal went down in the parking lot of a mall in Lucena. The baby girl was handed over in exchange for ₱13,000 — like a commodity.

But the story doesn’t end there.

Three days later, the mother inexplicably reclaimed the baby, only to sell her again on June 25, this time in the parking area of Pacific Mall in Barangay 3, Lucena City. The price? ₱52,000.

This second, more brazen transaction was witnessed by none other than the baby’s own grandmother, who had seen enough. Overcome with guilt and horror, she reported the entire incident to the Lucena City Police Station.

That tip-off set off a fast and coordinated response. Teams from the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), Lucena City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), Quezon Provincial Police Office (PPO), the Women and Children Protection Center (WCPC) Camp Crame, and the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 4A (RMFB4A) joined forces to track down all suspects.

A rescue operation was launched within hours. In a dramatic turn of events, the baby was recovered safely, and all those involved — the mother, the midwife, and the buyer couple — were arrested on the spot.

The infant is now under the care of the CSWDO in Lucena City, where she is receiving proper attention and protection while social workers and authorities prepare to file multiple charges against the accused.

Locals were left stunned by the heartless act of a mother selling her own child — not once, but twice. Police are investigating whether this was an isolated incident or part of a bigger baby trafficking operation.

“We will make sure justice is served,” said an officer involved in the rescue. “No child deserves to be treated like property.”

As the case unfolds, the rescued baby girl now has a second chance at life — thanks to the brave grandmother who refused to stay silent.

A child betrayed, a family torn, and a town left shaken — but justice is on its way.
