Rep. Paolo Duterte Addresses Bar Altercation Video, Says Reelection Up to Davao Voters

Davao City First District Representative Paolo Duterte has responded to renewed public attention following the circulation of a video showing him allegedly striking a man inside a bar in Davao City. The footage, which dates back to February, recently resurfaced online and has sparked discussion among constituents and political observers.

In response, Duterte released a video message via his official Facebook page, where he acknowledged the existence of the video but emphasized that the incident occurred several months ago. He indicated that the matter should be left to the judgment of Davaoeños, particularly in light of his candidacy for reelection in the May polls.

Duterte did not deny the incident but chose to shift the narrative toward allowing the democratic process to determine the outcome of his political future. He distanced himself from any attempt to influence public perception and said the decision of whether he remains in office rests solely with his constituents.

The congressman also addressed the legal aspect of the controversy, stating that his legal team has yet to receive any formal documentation regarding the filing of a complaint. According to him, the allegations and supporting testimonies appeared on social media before reaching any official investigative or prosecutorial body, which has prevented him from issuing a more detailed response.

Despite the video’s impact on social media, Duterte maintains support from a significant portion of his voter base. The incident, however, comes at a critical time as he campaigns for another term in Congress. His main opponent is PBA party-list Representative Margarita “Migs” Nograles, daughter of the late former House Speaker Prospero Nograles—a political figure long associated with the rival camp in Davao City politics.

The emergence of the video has intensified scrutiny of Duterte's conduct as a public official. It also raises broader questions about accountability, public behavior, and how such controversies can influence voter sentiment, especially in a city where the Duterte name continues to hold considerable political weight.
