Manila, PhilippinesPresident Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. delivered his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) before a joint session of Congress on Monday, highlighting economic recovery, infrastructure development, social welfare expansion, and a renewed commitment to transparency and accountability.

Speaking at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City, President Marcos laid out his administration’s priorities for the remainder of his term, vowing to deliver “a Bagong Pilipinas” centered on integrity, modernization, and inclusive growth.

Budget Veto Warning and Anti-Corruption Stance

In a bold statement, Marcos warned he would veto the proposed 2026 national budget if it does not align with his administration’s National Expenditure Program (NEP). He emphasized zero tolerance for misused public funds, citing flood control and infrastructure projects as examples of areas plagued by irregularities.

"Government officials who steal from our people — whether for flood control, food supply, or social services — will be held accountable,” Marcos declared, drawing applause from lawmakers.

Economic Recovery and Infrastructure

The President credited the country’s steady economic performance to targeted programs and infrastructure investments. He highlighted the success of the “Build Better More” program, which has completed 27,000 kilometers of roads and nearly 9,000 flood control structures since 2022.

“We have weathered the storms of inflation, pandemic setbacks, and natural calamities. Now we are building a resilient foundation for long-term progress,” he said.

Education and Digital Transformation

Marcos announced initiatives to enhance education through digitalization, teacher support, and curriculum modernization. A unified student ID system is set to be rolled out nationwide, with free Wi-Fi installed in thousands of schools.

“Education must not only inform but also transform. Our children must be prepared for the digital and globalized world,” he stressed.

OFWs and Social Services

The President acknowledged the sacrifices of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), vowing to streamline government support through the Department of Migrant Workers.

He also highlighted increases in cash assistance, housing programs, and healthcare access for vulnerable sectors.

He reiterated the administration’s effort to reduce the cost of food and essential goods through programs like the Kadiwa ng Pangulo and stronger support for local farmers and fisherfolk.

Mindanao Development and Peacebuilding

Marcos reaffirmed support for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and pledged to sustain peace efforts with Moro and communist insurgents.

“Mindanao’s time has come. Peace and prosperity must reach every corner of the country,” he said.

Climate and Disaster Preparedness

Citing the deadly effects of recent typhoons and monsoon rains, Marcos stressed the urgency of climate-resilient planning, improved flood control, and better early warning systems.

“We must stop rebuilding only after disasters. We must prepare and prevent,” he urged.

Call for Unity

Ending his address, the President called for national unity and collective responsibility in shaping the future.

“Let us work together, not just for today, but for the generations who will inherit this land. This is the time for bold action — a time for Bagong Pilipinas,” he concluded.

Reactions

Lawmakers and political analysts offered mixed reactions, praising the ambitious targets while questioning implementation timelines and budget accountability. Activist groups held demonstrations outside Congress and at embassies abroad, calling the speech “out of touch” with ground realities.

Despite the challenges ahead, Marcos struck an optimistic tone, reinforcing his administration’s pledge to “build a government that works for the people — and only the people.”
