A police officer was killed while another remains in critical condition after a recently released ex-convict wrested a firearm from authorities and opened fire inside the Carmona Component City Police Station on Wednesday morning.

Authorities identified the fatality as Police Master Sergeant Joel Mendoza, while his colleague, Police Staff Sergeant Joseph Martin Fabula, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition following the attack.

The suspect, known only by the alias "Oliver," 29, a native of Basilan, was also killed during the incident.

Initial police reports revealed that the suspect had been arrested earlier that morning for trespassing and was brought to the Carmona police station around 9:20 a.m.

However, for still-undisclosed reasons, the complainant later declined to press charges.

As police officers were processing the release, the suspect reportedly lunged for Mendoza’s service firearm—a Glock 9mm pistol—resulting in a violent scuffle. During the altercation, Mendoza was shot, and Fabula was also struck by gunfire. Responding officers then shot the suspect, who sustained three gunshot wounds and died on the spot.

Mendoza succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Fabula remains under intensive care.

Police noted that the suspect had just been released from the Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm on June 28, 2025, but it remains unclear what motivated his violent actions.

Investigators recovered Mendoza’s issued firearm at the scene and have launched a full probe into the incident.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has yet to release an official statement as the investigation continues.
