HONOLULU — The Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu has extended financial assistance to a Filipino fisherman who was injured in a maritime accident while working in Hawaiian waters.
The fisherman, whose name was withheld for privacy, sustained injuries that left him temporarily unable to work. The aid will help cover his medical bills and provide basic financial support as he recovers.
The assistance was funded through the AKSYON Fund (Ayuda para sa Kabuhayan, Seguridad, at Yaman ng mga Oportunidad sa mga Nangangailangan), a program of the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) that offers emergency relief and livelihood assistance to overseas Filipinos in distress. The Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Los Angeles — which has jurisdiction over Hawaii — endorsed the case for funding.
Philippine officials in Honolulu emphasized that maritime work, particularly in commercial fishing, carries significant risks, and many overseas Filipino fishermen face dangerous conditions at sea. The DMW and its overseas offices regularly step in to provide aid to injured or distressed workers, ensuring they have access to medical care and temporary financial relief.
“The AKSYON Fund exists for situations exactly like this — when one of our overseas workers faces unexpected hardship and needs urgent help,” the consulate said in a statement.
