New York — The Philippines reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to disarmament and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction during the UN First Committee Thematic Debate on Cluster I: Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, held this week at the United Nations.

First Committee Expert Paolo Marco Mapula delivered the Philippine national statement, as well as the statement on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), highlighting both national and regional resolve to strengthen global governance structures that prohibit the use of chemical, biological, and radiological weapons.

Mapula emphasized the Philippines’ unwavering support for efforts aimed at preventing the proliferation of these weapons and advancing collective measures toward their total eradication. He also underscored the importance of reinforcing multilateral frameworks that ensure compliance and accountability among states.

Speaking on behalf of ASEAN, Mapula conveyed the regional bloc’s recognition of the continued threat posed by weapons of mass destruction and its commitment to addressing both existing and emerging challenges through enhanced international cooperation. He stressed that ASEAN remains dedicated to ensuring that scientific and technological progress is harnessed for the well-being of all peoples, not for destructive purposes.

The Philippines’ intervention aligns with its long-standing advocacy for peace, security, and the responsible use of science and technology, reflecting its active role in global non-proliferation and disarmament initiatives within the United Nations.
