MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has reported that Tropical Storm “Fung-Wong” has slightly intensified as it continues to move northwestward toward the Philippines.
In its Cyclone Advisory No. 7 issued at 11:00 p.m., PAGASA said the weather system is projected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday night (November 7) or early Saturday morning (November 8), where it will be assigned the local name “Uwan.”
Although forecasts remain uncertain for the coming days, PAGASA warned that there is an increasing likelihood of landfall in Northern or Central Luzon by Monday (November 10). The storm is also expected to rapidly intensify, reaching typhoon category by Friday and possibly super typhoon status by Saturday, potentially making landfall near its peak intensity.
“The highest possible Wind Signal for the current forecast scenario is Signal No. 5,” PAGASA said, urging residents in potentially affected areas to closely monitor updates and prepare for worsening conditions.
Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Expected
The weather bureau said wind signals may be raised as early as Friday afternoon or Saturday morning over the eastern portions of Luzon and Samar provinces. Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate by Sunday (November 9), bringing strong winds, heavy rainfall, and possible flooding to parts of Northern and Central Luzon on Monday and Tuesday (November 10–11).
PAGASA also warned of a potentially life-threatening storm surge and coastal flooding, especially along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon. Storm surge warnings may be issued by Saturday.
Rough Seas and Marine Hazards
Moderate to rough seas are expected to develop along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern coasts of the Visayas and Mindanao by Friday or Saturday.By Sunday, sea conditions may become very rough to phenomenal, making maritime travel extremely dangerous. A Gale Warning is likely to be issued on Saturday.
PAGASA advised fisherfolk and operators of small sea vessels to avoid sailing in affected areas as strong winds and towering waves are expected over open waters.
Public Urged to Stay Alert
Authorities are reminding the public, especially communities in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, to stay alert and follow advisories from local government units.
PAGASA will issue its next update as Tropical Storm “Fung-Wong” moves closer to the Philippine boundary and possibly strengthens into Super Typhoon “Uwan.”
