NYC Officials Reaffirm Support for Immigrant Communities Amid National Uncertainty

In response to growing concerns among immigrant communities due to recent national political developments, New York City officials gathered at City Hall for a roundtable discussion with ethnic media outlets to reaffirm the city's commitment to protecting immigrant New Yorkers and ensuring they are aware of available resources.

"Immigrant New Yorkers are the heart of this city," said Dr. Michelle Morse, Acting Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). "We want to make it clear that immigrant New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, should feel safe accessing city resources and services."

Manuel Castro, Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), echoed this message, stressing the city's unwavering support for immigrant residents.

Health care accessibility was a major focus of the discussion. Dr. Jonathan Jimenez, Executive Director of NYC Care at NYC Health + Hospitals, emphasized that health care is a human right in New York City. "New Yorkers who are ineligible for health insurance can enroll in NYC Care, which provides low- or no-cost health care," said Jimenez. "Your privacy is important to us. You are not required to share information about your immigration status when seeking care at any of our hospitals or clinics."

Adrienne Lever, Executive Director of the Public Engagement Unit (PEU), warned that fear and misinformation are preventing many immigrants from seeking essential health services. "Too many immigrant New Yorkers are avoiding doctors and hospitals — even though care is safe, free, and confidential," Lever said. She noted that PEU staff are actively working in neighborhoods across the city, providing trusted information and helping residents connect to the services they need.

MOIA also announced the launch of a "Know Your Rights" campaign to educate immigrant New Yorkers about their legal protections during encounters with federal immigration enforcement. More information about this initiative can be found at nyc.gov/immigrants.
