The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) has criticized Leyte 4th District Representative Richard “Goma” Gomez after he accused reporters of engaging in “media spin” and publicly posted their names and phone numbers on Facebook.
In a post on August 28, Gomez alleged that the similarities in questions and interview requests from different journalists proved that someone was orchestrating efforts against him. He further claimed that reporters were being “paid” to seek his comment on the collapse of a flood control structure in Matag-ob that has been linked to him.

The NUJP said Gomez’s decision to disclose the personal information of reporters is “irresponsible and dangerous,” warning that it exposes them to harassment, threats, and possible fraud. The group added that the move may constitute a violation of the Data Privacy Act.
“Requesting a public official’s comment is a basic function of journalism. It ensures fairness and gives officials the opportunity to present their side,” the NUJP said. “To dismiss these requests as ‘spin’ or worse, as bribed work, undermines both press freedom and public accountability.”
The requests for Gomez’s side stemmed from allegations made by Matag-ob Mayor Bernie Tacoy, who earlier criticized the lawmaker for his alleged lack of support during heavy flooding and raised questions about his role in the failed infrastructure project.

Media groups pointed out that Gomez could have simply declined to comment instead of imputing malice to legitimate journalistic inquiries.
The controversy comes as Philippine media organizations continue to reflect on ethical standards, but the NUJP emphasized that attempts to discredit journalists for doing their jobs only erode transparency and accountability in governance.
As of press time, Gomez has not issued a follow-up statement on the backlash.
