In a major shift to enhance airport efficiency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has officially ended the post-9/11 “Shoes-Off” policy for travelers at airport security checkpoints across the country.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the change, citing improved security technology and a multi-layered screening system as key factors that allow for the policy reversal without compromising safety.

“Ending the ‘Shoes-Off’ policy is the latest step by the Department of Homeland Security to modernize and enhance the travel experience at airports nationwide,” Secretary Noem said. “We expect this will help speed up the process at TSA checkpoints, resulting in a smoother and more efficient travel experience.”

Although passengers can now keep their shoes on, other security measures remain in place—including identity checks, Secure Flight vetting, and baggage screening.

The move is part of broader efforts under the Trump administration’s transportation agenda. DHS recently launched the “Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease” program, which offers TSA PreCheck discounts and expedited lanes for uniformed service members and their families. Additionally, the TSA began enforcing the REAL ID requirement in May, reaching a 94% compliance rate—streamlining security without compromising vigilance.

“This is one of many initiatives being advanced by the Trump administration to realize the President’s vision for a New Golden Age of Travel in America,” Noem added.

Travelers nationwide can expect shorter lines and a more comfortable experience as the updated measures roll out at all TSA checkpoints.
