CEBU - What was supposed to be a simple trip to seek help after a typhoon turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for a young mother struggling to support her family.
Mary Christ Cuizon, 31, collapsed and died while waiting in line to validate records for ₱5,000 financial assistancefor victims of Typhoon Tino, which hit Cebu last November, at the Barangay Opao gymnasium in Mandaue City.
Cuizon, a resident of Zone Talong, Barangay Paknaan, was later declared dead on arrival at Mandaue City Hospital on Wednesday, March 11.
Her father, Jenniffer Cuizon, said Mary Christ had gone to the gym hoping to process the documents required to receive the cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) after their home was partially damaged by the typhoon.
Like many others seeking aid, she had been waiting in line inside the crowded gym when she suddenly collapsed.
Bystanders rushed to help and attempted to revive her while waiting for emergency responders. But according to the family, the ambulance reportedly arrived nearly 30 minutes later.
Despite efforts to save her, the young mother did not survive.
Her father said Mary Christ had been experiencing recurring weakness since giving birth to her fourth child six months ago. In previous incidents, she would usually recover after resting and applying “White Flower,” a commonly used medicated oil in the Philippines.
This time, however, she never recovered.
The tragedy highlights the harsh reality faced by many poor families who must line up for hours just to receive modest disaster assistance.
Mary Christ had gone to the gym simply hoping to secure ₱5,000 in aid to help her family rebuild after the storm.
Instead, she left her home that day and never returned.
She is survived by four young children, who are now left without their mother.
