The Makabayan bloc slammed President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for failing to jail any high-ranking government officials linked to the controversial flood control scandal before Christmas, despite his earlier promise.
The group said Marcos’ self-imposed deadline has passed with no “big fish” arrested, calling the pledge a public relations stunt.
“So much for the promise that someone would spend Christmas in jail. The Filipino people were misled,” the bloc said. “The President’s Christmas deadline turned out to be empty rhetoric meant to calm public anger over massive corruption in his administration.”
Makabayan went further, branding Marcos’ anti-corruption campaign as “the biggest Christmas scam.”
“The real Christmas scam is the administration’s pretense of fighting corruption while shielding the powerful and well-connected,” the group said.
According to Makabayan, the public is demanding real accountability, not seasonal press statements and broken promises timed for the holidays.
“Marcos’ anti-corruption rhetoric is nothing but a performance to distract from his administration’s failures,” the bloc said. “We urge the Filipino people to remain firm in demanding accountability and to enter the new year with stronger resolve to end systemic corruption.”
