Leyte Mayor Blasts Actor-Congressman Over Failed Flood Project

MATAG-OB, PHILIPPINES — Mayor Bernie Tacoy is calling out Leyte 4th District Representative Richard “Goma” Gomez after a local flood control project failed spectacularly, leaving parts of the structure damaged following heavy rains.

Tacoy slammed Gomez for allegedly defending the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and its contractors instead of addressing concerns over possible corruption and mismanagement.

“It’s troubling to see him lawyering for the DPWH and its contractors,” Tacoy said. “His statements raise more questions than answers on this critical issue.”

The mayor also highlighted what he called a double standard: Gomez previously criticized the National Housing Authority over poor housing for earthquake victims in 2017, yet his response to Matag-ob’s flood control failure has been muted.

“Well, it depends on which lens you are coming from,” Tacoy remarked.

Tacoy emphasized that the local government is launching a full investigation to hold all parties accountable. “Insults and character attacks won’t erase the issues we’ve raised. I am not the enemy here,” he said.

According to the mayor, the flood control project was built without proper coordination with Matag-ob’s local government, though it was reportedly done with Gomez’s knowledge.

Tacoy also thanked both local and national media for amplifying the town’s concerns, ensuring the voices of residents are heard.

As the investigation continues, Tacoy vowed to hold everyone responsible, sending a strong message that public safety and taxpayer money come first—even if it involves high-profile politicians.
