JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Dr. José Rizal Plaza in Jersey City to commemorate the 165th Birth Anniversary of Philippine national hero Dr. José Rizal.

The event was spearheaded by the New Jersey Chapter of the Knights of Rizal and attended by distinguished officers and members from the organization’s Eastern Region, New York, and New Jersey chapters.

Among those in attendance were USA Eastern Regional Commander Sir Emmanuel Malasig, MD, KGOR; USA Eastern Regional Adviser Sir Victor Sison, Esq., KGCR; USA Eastern Regional Executive Director Ed Toloza, KGOR; Eastern Regional Deputy Pursuivant Vicente Gesmundo, KCR; Eastern Regional Exchequer Levi Tejada, KGOR; New York Area Commander Rely Manacay; New York Chapter Commanders Ali Ilaga, KCR, and Ramesh Buzeta, KCR; New Jersey Area Commander Dick Ong, KGOR; fellow Knights of Rizal officers and members; as well as officers and members of the Ladies for Rizal–New Jersey Chapter and Kababaihang Rizal–Manhattan Chapter.

Born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna, Dr. José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda became one of the most influential figures in Philippine history. A physician, novelist, scholar, and reformist, Rizal used his writings to expose the abuses of Spanish colonial rule and advocate for peaceful reforms. His novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, awakened Filipino nationalism and inspired generations to seek freedom and justice.

Although Rizal promoted peaceful change rather than armed revolution, Spanish authorities viewed his ideas as a threat. He was arrested, tried for sedition, rebellion, and conspiracy, and executed by firing squad on December 30, 1896, in Manila. His martyrdom galvanized the Philippine independence movement, and he is widely regarded as the country's foremost national hero.

The ceremony marked the beginning of a full day of activities celebrating Rizal’s life, legacy, and enduring contributions to the Filipino nation, with commemorative events held in both New Jersey and New York.

As participants paid tribute to the hero who awakened the Filipino spirit through his writings and advocacy for reform, speakers highlighted the continuing relevance of Rizal’s ideals of patriotism, integrity, education, and public service.

Organizers said the celebration served as a reminder that Rizal’s vision for a just, enlightened, and united society continues to inspire Filipinos around the world, including members of the Filipino-American community.
