New York City — A heartwarming celebration of music, resilience, and community takes center stage in Song of the Fireflies, a new Philippine musical-drama premiering in 2025. The film retells the inspiring origin story of the world-renowned Loboc Children’s Choir from Bohol, whose humble beginnings in the 1980s would eventually capture hearts around the globe.

At the core of this moving story is Alma Taldo, the dedicated music teacher who founded the choir and nurtured her students’ talents against all odds. Portrayed by celebrated singer and actress Morissette Amon in her first lead film role, Taldo’s unwavering belief in the children of Loboc demonstrates the power of education, music, and determination.

Set between the 1980s and 1993, the film follows a group of young singers, ages nine to thirteen, who dreamed of using their voices to be heard beyond their small-town classroom. Despite challenges of poverty, scarce resources, and even natural disasters, the children pressed forward with remarkable courage. Alongside Taldo, the story also highlights the vital role of Enriqueta “Equet” Butalid, a cultural advocate who championed the group and ensured that their songs could travel far beyond Bohol. Multi-awarded actress Rachel Alejandro takes on the role of Butalid, bringing depth to this pivotal figure in the choir’s journey.

Rounding out the cast is Noel Comia Jr., whose performance adds emotional resonance to the narrative. Behind the camera, Song of the Fireflies is helmed by director King Palisoc, with a screenplay written by Sarge Lacuesta. The film’s musical backbone is powered by some of the Philippines’ most respected composers and musicians, including Ryan Cayabyab, Louie Ocampo, Raimund Marasigan, Jazz Nicolas, and Krina Cayabyab, whose collective artistry elevates the story into a stirring cinematic experience.

The film has already begun making waves in the international festival circuit. It had its world premiere at the Manila International Film Festival in Los Angeles earlier this year, where it received standing ovations and critical acclaim. Song of the Fireflies went on to sweep major awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Morissette, Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Alejandro, and Best Supporting Actor for Noel Comia Jr., along with a Special Jury Prize. Adding to its list of accolades, the film also won the prestigious Platinum Remi Award at the WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, a testament to its universal message and artistic excellence.

With its blend of heartfelt performances, soul-stirring music, and authentic storytelling, Song of the Fireflies is more than just a film—it is a tribute to the resilience of Filipino children and the transformative power of song. Audiences can look forward to experiencing this inspiring journey when the movie opens its premiere at the Soho International Film Festival - Regal Union Square Oct. 11, 2025 6.40pm.
