Woodside, NY - A festive atmosphere filled Woodside on June 13 as community leaders, diplomats, and residents gathered for the formal opening of Little Manila Park, the first Filipino-themed park in New York City.

The small parcel of land on 70th Street, once an unused and neglected space, has been transformed into a community landmark honoring the contributions of Filipino nurses, caregivers, and the spirit of bayanihan.

The project was spearheaded by Architect Noel Gamboa and his wife, Dori Gamboa, who launched the initiative in 2023. Over the years, Filipino organizations and community members joined the effort, helping turn the vision into reality.

Leading the ceremonial ribbon-cutting were Loida Nicolas Lewis, Assemblymember Steven Raga, Consul General Senen Mangalile, and Ambassador Mario Lopez de Leon Jr.

The park features three gazebos named after the Philippines’ major island groups Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The Visayas gazebo was dedicated in honor of the late Gina Lopez, known for her environmental advocacy and commitment to children's welfare.

The Mindanao gazebo was sponsored by Dr. Emilio Quines and Dr. Angie Cruz, while the Luzon gazebo is still seeking a sponsor to help maintain the structure.

A special station within the park is dedicated to Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal.

While the park is nearly complete, organizers noted that additional improvements, including water service, electricity, and public restroom facilities, are still needed.

During the program, Loida Nicolas Lewis praised the dedication and perseverance of Noel and Dori Gamboa in bringing the project to life. The Gamboa couple, in turn, emphasized that Little Manila Park is a testament to the power of bayanihan and community collaboration.

Consul General Mangalile encouraged Filipino Americans to continue working together to preserve and sustain the park for future generations.

Community groups may reserve and utilize the park during the spring, summer, and fall seasons through scheduled activities.

Woodside, Queens, widely recognized as the heart of the Filipino community in New York, is home to one of the largest concentrations of Filipinos in the United States, making Little Manila Park a meaningful symbol of Filipino heritage, unity, and pride. - with a report from Cesar "Boyet" Loverita, Jr.
