Gabriela lawmaker presses Congress to pass long-delayed anti-dynasty bill

House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Sarah Elago dared the House leadership to back up its words with action by immediately passing the anti-political dynasty bill.

Elago’s challenge came after Speaker Faustino Dy III voiced his support for the measure earlier this week.

“If the Speaker and House leaders are truly serious about ending political dynasties, then the next move is simple — pass the pending bills that will finally enforce the constitutional ban,” Elago said.

The progressive solon reminded the public that the Makabayan bloc has long fought against political dynasties, not just during elections but in every Congress, saying these powerful families have long undermined democracy and accountability in government.

Elago herself filed House Bill 4784, while the Makabayan bloc pushed HB 209, both seeking to define and prohibit political dynasties under the 1987 Constitution.

She called the anti-dynasty law a “long-overdue reform” that could open the doors for new, people-oriented leaders who truly represent the masses.

Elago added that dynasties have tightened control over power and wealth, leaving ordinary citizens — especially women, workers, farmers, and the poor — out of crucial decisions that affect their lives.
