Former Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte remains in good spirits as he faces ongoing legal challenges at The Hague, according to his lead attorney, Nicholas Kaufman.
In an update provided on Thursday, Atty. Kaufman emphasized that Duterte had no involvement in the alleged destruction of evidence—a criminal offense that Kaufman categorically denied was carried out at Duterte’s behest. “We do not believe any evidence has been destroyed,” he said.
The lawyer also criticized recent comments made by fellow counsel Atty. Kristina Conti regarding Duterte’s interim release, calling them “unethical interference” and dismissing them as mere “ramblings.”
Currently, Duterte’s days are filled with legal consultations and family visits, Kaufman reported.
Regarding the Philippine House of Representatives’ resolution opposing Duterte’s interim release, Kaufman refrained from commenting, stating, “I am a lawyer, and I deal with legal matters only.” He added that such political issues are outside his scope.
On the Department of Justice’s offer to assist witnesses in the case, Kaufman reiterated that this was a political move but assured that Duterte’s defense team would thoroughly cross-examine all witnesses once they appear in court.
Both Duterte and his legal counsel share a consistent message for the Filipino people: to respect the judicial process and uphold the integrity of the courts.
“We are confident in working towards bringing the former President home,” Kaufman concluded.
