Food security and education were among the key priorities discussed during a recent meeting between Northern Samar Governor Harris Christopher Ongchuan and former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan.

The dialogue focused on strengthening programs that support Filipino farmers, fisherfolk, and students sectors considered critical to the country’s long-term development.

A major part of the discussion centered on expanding assistance for farmers and fisherfolk through the Sagip Saka Act, a landmark measure championed by Pangilinan during his time in the Senate. The law aims to boost agricultural productivity by providing training, farming and fishing equipment, and other essential production support to agricultural communities.

The Sagip Saka Act also improves farmers’ and fisherfolk’s access to credit facilities and crop insurance, helping protect them from financial risks while enabling them to expand their livelihoods and contribute to the country’s food supply.

Another key provision allows national and local government units to directly purchase agricultural and fishery products from farmers and fisherfolk, reducing the role of middlemen and helping producers receive fairer prices for their goods while strengthening the country’s food distribution system.

Pangilinan also reaffirmed his strong support for education initiatives aimed at expanding access and opportunities for Filipino students, emphasizing that investing in education is crucial to empowering the youth and building a more inclusive future for the Philippines.

Governor Ongchuan expressed gratitude to Pangilinan for his continued support for the people of Northern Samar and for advancing policies that benefit local communities.
