Sebastian “Baste” Eviota, 26, has made history as the first full-blooded Filipino to join the prestigious Swiss Guard Corps of the Vatican, a 135-member unit entrusted with the protection of the Pope.

Known for their iconic Renaissance-era uniforms and centuries-old tradition, the Swiss Guards serve as the official security force of the Vatican and the Holy Father. Eviota’s inclusion into this elite corps marks a significant milestone for the global Filipino community.

In an interview, Eviota shared fond memories of his personal encounters with the late Pope Francis, recalling their conversations and the Pontiff’s thoughtful gesture of giving him religious books. He also revealed that Pope Francis had a special nickname for him—“El Filipino”—a title that Eviota said he carried with pride.

The Embassy of Switzerland in the Philippines recognized the historic achievement by posting Eviota’s photo on its official Facebook page on May 9, celebrating his appointment as the first Filipino member of the Swiss Guard.

Eviota’s accomplishment is not only a personal triumph but also a symbolic breakthrough, reflecting the increasing diversity within one of the Vatican’s most time-honored institutions. His story continues to inspire Filipinos around the world to pursue excellence and service beyond borders.
