The Provincial Government of Samar has declared a “Blue Alert” following the sudden closure of the San Juanico Bridge, a vital infrastructure connecting the provinces of Samar and Leyte. The move aims to address the disruptions caused by the bridge’s structural concerns, which have impacted transportation, commerce, and the delivery of essential goods.
The San Juanico Bridge, stretching over 2.1 kilometers, is a critical artery for economic activity and logistics in the region. Its closure came after engineers expressed concerns over its structural integrity, prompting authorities to prioritize safety.
In a statement, the Regional Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) emphasized the importance of the alert, saying, “This emergency declaration allows us to mobilize necessary resources and coordinate with national agencies to ensure the safety of our people and maintain access to vital supplies and services.”
The local government has coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to manage traffic rerouting, provide alternative transportation options, and conduct immediate assessments of the bridge’s condition.
Residents and businesses are urged to stay updated through official government channels. Emergency assistance and support services are actively being deployed to affected communities.
Travelers crossing from Samar are advised to go to San Antonio village in Basey, where a 15-minute boat ride connects to downtown Tacloban, allowing continued access to Leyte. Cargo and freight operators are encouraged to use roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping services to ensure logistical continuity.
Alternative port options include:
Leyte Island: Tacloban, Ormoc, Hilongos, Maasin, Palompon, Calubian, Villaba
Biliran: Naval Port
Samar Island: Calbayog and Catbalogan Ports
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) remains on high alert, monitoring the situation closely to ensure the safety of all residents and travelers.
