President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. admitted that the Philippines’ tourism industry is lagging behind its Asian neighbors and must work harder to catch up.

Marcos made the remark days after removing Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco from her post and appointing her as Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities.

Speaking at the opening of the Mactan Expo Center in Cebu on March 16, the President said the country’s tourism sector is facing significant pressure.

“Our tourism industry is now under a great deal of pressure because of what’s happening. And last year, we only welcomed 6 million people,” Marcos said.

He compared the Philippines’ numbers with Thailand, which he noted receives about 30 million tourists annually.

“Just to give you a frame of reference, Thailand welcomes 30 million tourists every year. So we have a lot of catching up to do,” he added.

Marcos also underscored the key role of Cebu in efforts to revive the country’s tourism industry.

“Of course, Cebu will always play a very, very large part in all our plans for tourism,” he said.

The President said the government is working to strengthen tourism and boost arrivals, citing the opening of the Mactan Expo as part of efforts to promote Cebu as a major destination.

Meanwhile, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Marcos continues to trust Frasco’s capabilities despite the country’s tourism challenges.

“First of all, Secretary Frasco still has the trust of the President. The President knows that she can perform the task given to her,” Castro said.

Tourism Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso will serve as officer-in-charge of the Department of Tourism in the meantime.
