Comelec Halts Proclamation of Duterte Youth, Bagong Henerasyon Due to Pending Disqualification Cases

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) suspended on Monday the proclamation of Duterte Youth and Bagong Henerasyon as winning party-lists in the recent elections due to pending disqualification petitions filed against their organizations.

Duterte Youth secured 5.6% of the total party-list votes, qualifying for three seats in the House of Representatives. Bagong Henerasyon, with 0.8% of the votes, is entitled to one seat. Both groups are known supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte and Vice President Sara Duterte.

The suspension was based on National Board of Canvassers Resolution No. 14-25, which cited separate petitions challenging the eligibility of Duterte Youth. These petitions were filed by several individuals and groups, including Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines and student regents from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the University of the Philippines.

A separate disqualification petition was filed by lawyer Russel Stanley Geronimo against Bagong Henerasyon.

Due to the serious allegations involving potential violations of election laws, the Comelec opted to put on hold the proclamation of both Duterte Youth and Bagong Henerasyon.

In response, Duterte Youth announced plans to elevate the matter to the Supreme Court, arguing that the Comelec acted with grave abuse of discretion in its decision to withhold the congressional seats of its nominees Drixie Cardema, Berlin Lingwa, and Ron Bawalan.

Bagong Henerasyon also raised objections to the suspension, criticizing the Comelec for its sudden announcement without prior notice. The group is represented in the House by Rep. Bernadette Herrera.
