The recent election of Bishop Robert Francis Prevost, OSA, D.D., as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church—now taking the name Pope Leo XIV—has sparked joy and reflection among the Augustinian friars and parishioners of Santo Niño de Cebu Parish in Barangay Mohon, Talisay City, Cebu. The community fondly remembers his pastoral visit years ago, which has now taken on profound spiritual significance in light of his elevation to the papacy.
Pope Leo XIV, a member of the Order of Saint Augustine, once visited the Santo Niño de Cebu Parish during a momentous occasion: the 19th Anniversary of the Canonical Foundation of the friary. During his visit, he led the solemn rite of blessing for the friary, marking a deeply meaningful moment for the local Augustinian community. The visit not only highlighted the enduring presence of the Augustinian order in the Philippines but also demonstrated Bishop Prevost’s strong connection with religious communities around the world, even before his election to the Holy See.
The event, held in the heart of Talisay City, brought together friars, parishioners, and members of the wider Catholic faithful who were deeply moved by his presence and pastoral spirit. His engagement with the community was characterized by warmth, humility, and a deep sense of spiritual solidarity—qualities that many now see reflected in his early actions and messages as Pope.

Now as Supreme Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV is entrusted with the enormous responsibility of guiding the global Catholic Church in a time marked by both challenges and opportunities. His background in missionary work, theological scholarship, and leadership within the Order of Saint Augustine has prepared him for a papacy that is expected to emphasize unity, compassion, and renewal.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV has served in various roles across the globe, including as Prior Provincial in Peru and later as the Bishop of Chiclayo. He was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops in Rome before ascending to the papacy. Throughout his ministry, he has been known for his pastoral attentiveness, his commitment to the marginalized, and his ability to foster dialogue and understanding within diverse communities.
For the friars and faithful of Santo Niño de Cebu Parish, the memory of his visit remains a cherished and sacred encounter. His blessing of the friary is now seen as a moment of grace and spiritual fortitude—an early glimpse of the shepherdly leadership he would one day bring to the Universal Church.
As Pope Leo XIV begins his pontificate, the Augustinian community in Talisay City joins Catholics around the world in offering prayers for his strength, wisdom, and steadfast faith. They entrust his ministry to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, confident that he will lead the Church with humility, courage, and love.
This historic connection between the Santo Niño de Cebu friary and the newly elected Holy Father stands as a powerful reminder of the Church’s unity across continents, cultures, and time. It also affirms the significance of every pastoral encounter, for even a simple blessing in a small Philippine parish may one day echo from the heart of the Vatican.
