The families of several missing sabungeros (cockfighting enthusiasts) filed criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday, August 1, accusing businessman Charlie "Atong" Ang and others of murder and serious illegal detention.
Ryan Bautista, brother of missing Michael Bautista, confirmed the filing of the complaints.
Meanwhile, Charlene Lasco, sister of missing Ricardo Lasco, said that aside from Ang, the complaints also name Eric Dela Rosa, RJ Mea, Atty. Caroline Cruz, and several members of the police.
“This is just a filing for purposes of evaluation in connection with the missing sabungeros’ case,” said Prosecutor General Richard Fadullon.
He clarified that evaluation does not yet constitute a formal preliminary investigation. “All details — how many are being charged, who is being charged, and why — will only be disclosed once the case is ready for preliminary investigation,” he added.
Operatives from the PNP–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrived at the DOJ with several alleged witnesses and thick case files contained in blue folders.
PNP Chief Director General Nicolas Torre III was also present but declined to give any statement regarding the case.
