QUEENS, NEW YORK - Assemblymember Steven Raga is exploring a possible run for the New York State Senate seat expected to open in 2026, as political movement begins to take shape in Western Queens.

The seat is currently held by State Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris, who has announced he will not seek reelection in 2026, opening the door to a competitive race in the 12th Senate District.

In a statement, Raga expressed gratitude for Gianaris’ long tenure and confirmed he is beginning conversations across the district as he considers a campaign.

“Our communities are grateful to Senator Michael Gianaris for more than 25 years of service to Western Queens,” Raga said. “As he steps back in 2026, I’m exploring a run for this seat and starting conversations across the district. If you have ideas and priorities to share, I’m listening.”

Raga currently serves as the Assemblymember for the 30th District, representing parts of Woodside, Jackson Heights, Elmhurst, and Maspeth. He was first elected in 2022, becoming the first Filipino American elected to the New York State Legislature.

The expected retirement of Gianaris has already sparked early maneuvering among potential candidates and political groups in the district, which is considered one of the more progressive areas of Queens.

The 2026 state elections, including all State Senate seats, are scheduled for November 3, 2026, with primary elections set for June 23.

No formal campaign announcement has been made by Raga, but his early outreach signals what could become a closely watched race in Western Queens, particularly among the district’s large immigrant and Filipino American communities.
