The Association of Fil-Am Teachers of America (AFTA), the oldest Filipino American teachers organization in the United States, has congratulated three Filipino American educators on their promotion to assistant principal positions within the New York City Public Schools system, highlighting their achievements as a milestone for the growing Fil-Am presence in educational leadership.
Recognized were Melvin Damaolao and Jal Raval of Bronx International High School, and Marlyn Claro of Prospect Heights International High School.
AFTA praised the educators for their continued dedication to teaching and leadership, noting that their advancement reflects the increasing role of Filipino Americans in shaping academic communities across New York City.
The organization also commended the newly appointed assistant principals for conducting a professional development session at International High School at Lafayette, where they shared insights and best practices with fellow educators.
AFTA emphasized that the educators’ commitment to professional growth and mentorship continues to inspire both students and colleagues, while strengthening the Filipino American community’s impact in the field of education.
In a related initiative, AFTA also participated in the annual Paaralan sa Konsulado (PSK) planning meeting at the Philippine Consulate General in New York. Now on its 28th year, the program aims to provide students and parents with an engaging curriculum designed to deepen their understanding of Filipino heritage.

The organization expressed its appreciation to the Consulate, led by Consul General and joined by Deputy Consul General Adrian Cruz, Consul Anna Guerra, and staff members, for hosting the planning session. Also present were PSK teacher volunteers Lino Arca and Olive Abarquez, along with officers from the Knights of Rizal – Long Island (KORLI), Richie Rillera and Van Derodar Stevenson, who will assist in conducting Jose Rizal-focused classes.
The PSK summer Saturday classes are scheduled on July 11, 18, 25, and August 1, 2026, with registration set to open soon.
The recognition of Fil-Am educators and continued community initiatives underscore the growing leadership and cultural engagement of Filipino Americans in New York and beyond.
