Fugitive former Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co may face two possible outcomes in the Czech Republic deportation or the granting of political asylum according to a retired diplomat familiar with the situation.

Co is currently under the custody of Czech authorities after reportedly entering the country without proper documentation. Philippine officials have confirmed that they are coordinating closely with their Czech counterparts to facilitate legal processes that could lead to his return to the Philippines.

A retired diplomat explained that if Czech authorities determine Co has no valid legal basis to remain in the country, he could be deported back to the Philippines, where he is expected to face pending charges. Deportation or extradition proceedings may be pursued depending on the legal framework and agreements between the two countries.

However, the situation could take a different turn if Co files for asylum.

“If he formally applies and is able to demonstrate that he faces persecution or a serious threat to his safety if returned home, Czech authorities may consider granting him international protection,” the retired diplomat said.

Under Czech law, asylum applications undergo a thorough review by the Ministry of the Interior. This includes evaluating the applicant’s claims, legal status, and any outstanding criminal cases or international alerts.

While the application is pending, Co is expected to remain under the custody or supervision of Czech authorities. The review process may take several months, depending on the complexity of the case.

Legal experts note that asylum is granted only under strict conditions, typically requiring credible evidence of persecution based on political opinion, religion, nationality, or membership in a particular social group.

Ultimately, authorities will decide whether Co meets the criteria for international protection or whether legal grounds support his return to Philippine jurisdiction.
