NEW YORK - Mima Alicia Mira Lipata was more than the name now circulating on social media. She was a daughter, a sister, a mother, and a young woman shaped by hardship, ambition, and determination. Yet in the wake of her tragic passing on July 17, what should have been a moment of remembrance has, for many, been overshadowed by harsh criticism and hateful commentary.

Born in Manila, Alicia’s life began in struggle. Her mother, originally from Barangay Atipolo in Laoang, Samar, had moved to the city in search of a better life. There, Alicia’s family was formed, but tragedy struck early when her father passed away. Left with no choice, her mother brought the family back to the province, where Alicia would grow up facing the realities of poverty.

Despite these challenges, Alicia pursued her education, attending Vigo High School before transferring to Laoang National High School. While some former schoolmates described her as outspoken or difficult, those closest to her paint a far more complex picture one of resilience and responsibility beyond her years.

According to her sibling, Alicia stepped into the role of both provider and protector for their family. “We grew up without a father. Mama and Ate became both our mother and father,” they shared. Alicia worked tirelessly taking on various jobs, becoming a working student, and doing whatever she could to ensure her family had food on the table and expenses paid.

Her journey eventually led her to vlogging, a path she embraced not for fame, but as an opportunity to uplift her family. With the help of her sibling, who saved money from selling crabs to buy a simple cellphone, Alicia began creating content despite limited resources. That small beginning would later grow into a platform that reached thousands.

Alicia’s content evolved over time. Initially focused on her daily life and experiences, her voice grew stronger as she entered political vlogging. Her opinions, often bold and unfiltered, earned her both supporters and critics. While some admired her courage, others took offense, particularly following disagreements during political campaigns and bragging her wealth on social media. 

One former acquaintance recalled a falling out that escalated into personal attacks directed at him online and told him “pera-pera lang ito”  Despite this, he expressed that he ultimately chose forgiveness, valuing peace over conflict.

Behind the public persona, however, Alicia was described by friends and neighbors as generous and compassionate. Anazel Ashbourne, a close friend, shared that Alicia helped his family in many ways. “Behind social media, she was a different person kind and giving,” he said.

At just 19 years old, Alicia had already taken on the responsibility of motherhood and even a victim of battered partner. Determined to create a better future, she used her growing platform to earn income, eventually saving enough to invest in building a home for her family. From moving place to place to becoming a homeowner and breadwinner, her achievements reflected extraordinary perseverance at a young age.

On July 17, tragedy struck. News of Alicia’s death, along with the critical condition of her partner, devastated her family and community. What followed, however, revealed a troubling reality. Instead of unified mourning, social media became a space where condolences were often drowned out by hateful remarks.

Community members expressed deep concern over this response. “A person’s death should be a time to remember the good they have done,” one kababayan shared. “It is painful to see sympathy replaced by judgment and anger.”

Alicia’s story is not one of perfection, but of humanity. She was outspoken, driven, and at times controversial but she was also hardworking, loving, and deeply committed to her family. Her life reflects the struggles many face in silence: poverty, loss, responsibility at a young age, and the risks of speaking out in a politically divided environment.

As her family grieves this profound loss, they are calling not only for justice but also for compassion. They urge the public to look beyond differences and remember Alicia for her sacrifices, her resilience, and her love for those she cared for most.
