NEW YORK CITY — Tibetan activist Lobga Rangzen, a longtime advocate for a free Tibet, has died following an act of self-immolation near the United Nations in New York City.

Rangzen was widely known within the Tibetan community for his unwavering commitment to raising awareness about Tibet's struggle and for regularly participating in demonstrations outside the United Nations. For years, he joined fellow Tibetans in calling attention to what they viewed as China's occupation of Tibet and the erosion of Tibet's culture, religion, language, and identity under Chinese rule.

Friends and members of the community remembered Rangzen as a peaceful and compassionate individual who remained devoted to his cause. One person who knew him described him as a fellow Uber driver, a familiar face, and a kind man who never wished harm upon anyone.

Rangzen spent decades advocating for Tibetan human rights and the freedom of Tibet, believing that the international community should do more to address the situation in Tibet. His presence at protests outside the United Nations became a familiar sight to activists and supporters, where he repeatedly called on world leaders to take action.

His final act of protest through self-immolation has drawn renewed attention to the Tibetan cause and the ongoing calls from many Tibetans for greater international awareness and support.

The incident also comes amid broader international concerns over China's policies and territorial disputes, including continuing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where the Philippines and China have competing maritime claims. While separate from the Tibet issue, both have drawn international attention and criticism from governments and human rights advocates.

Supporters say that beyond the headlines and politics, Lobga Rangzen should be remembered as a human being who dedicated his life to the cause he believed in.

Authorities are investigating the incident.
