Franco Mabanta, founder of Peanut Gallery Media Network and a prominent social media personality known for his political commentaries online, was arrested by the National Bureau of Investigation over an alleged extortion case involving former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed Mabanta’s arrest on Wednesday.

Authorities said Mabanta was apprehended during an entrapment operation allegedly linked to a ₱350-million extortion complaint. Reports indicated that the social media personality was allegedly caught while receiving the initial installment amounting to ₱75 million.

The NBI has yet to release the full details surrounding the operation, including the circumstances that led to the filing of the complaint and the identities of other possible individuals involved.

Mabanta rose to prominence through PGMN, a media platform that produces political commentary content primarily distributed through YouTube and other social media channels. Over the years, he gained a large online following because of his outspoken political views and criticism of government personalities.

The arrest quickly drew widespread attention online, triggering reactions from both supporters and critics of the controversial political commentator.

Despite confirming the arrest, Matibag declined to provide further information pending a scheduled media briefing at 11 a.m., where the bureau is expected to present additional details regarding the case and the entrapment operation.

As of posting time, Mabanta’s camp has yet to issue an official statement regarding the allegations against him.
