Vice President Sara Duterte has openly declared that her political opponents want to remove her from the 2028 presidential race because she is widely seen as the frontrunner for the next national elections.
In an interview with Russian media, VP Duterte expressed concerns that the government is worried about her growing popularity. She alleged that officials are prepared to do everything possible to hinder her chances in the upcoming presidential contest.
Among the measures she cited were the imprisonment of her father, former President Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte, at The Hague in the Netherlands, and the filing of an impeachment complaint against her. According to VP Sara, these actions are designed to weaken her by targeting her family’s political brand.
“The survey shows that. And I think they want to eliminate the frontrunner… they think that if they take out former President Duterte, they will weaken me because it’s one brand, it’s one family,” she said.
In response, Malacañang challenged VP Duterte to publicly report details about her recent overseas trips, including the expenses incurred and the members of her delegation.
“Now she has admitted that she worked as vice president. She needs to report to the public on what she did in Australia and the outcomes of her official functions there,” Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said.
The Palace’s remarks reflect ongoing political tensions as the 2028 election season begins to take shape, with key figures already positioning themselves for the coming race.
