President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. continues to actively promote the Philippines’ candidacy for a nonpermanent seat in the United Nations Security Council for the 2027–2028 term.
In his remarks during the Independence Day vin d’honneur held at Malacañang Palace on Thursday evening, the President appealed to the diplomatic community, government officials, and legislators to support Manila’s bid.
“We just concluded an election, and yet, I find myself compelled to continue campaigning,” President Marcos stated as he addressed an audience of foreign envoys and senior government representatives.
He emphasized the nation’s enduring commitment to multilateralism, noting, “Our candidature is anchored in our country’s legacy in multilateralism as evidenced by our history of forging cooperation and seeking peace. We earnestly hope to receive the support of your respective governments in that field.”
The United Nations Security Council, tasked with the maintenance of international peace and security, is composed of five permanent members—China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States—alongside ten nonpermanent members elected for two-year terms.
The Philippines last occupied a nonpermanent seat during the 2004 to 2005 term.
Earlier this year, during the New Year vin d’honneur, President Marcos also made a similar appeal to garner support for the country’s candidacy, underscoring the administration’s commitment to securing the Philippines’ renewed participation in this vital international body.
