Davao City, Philippines – Two separate violent incidents in Davao City have raised alarm over public safety and gun-related violence, with one resulting in a fatal shooting and the other, a foiled attempt on a barangay official's life.

In the first incident, a police officer assigned to the Ecoland Police Station is facing criminal and administrative charges after allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend inside a parked vehicle along Palma Gil Street in Barangay 13-B on the evening of May 22. Witnesses reported hearing gunfire and seeing a man dressed in black flee the scene. The 39-year-old female victim was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Investigators recovered two spent 9mm shell casings from the scene. The suspect surrendered to authorities early the following morning.

Four days later, on the morning of May 26, a 56-year-old barangay kagawad in Barangay Tibungco narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. According to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), a 37-year-old suspect tried to shoot the kagawad with a .38-caliber pistol, which misfired. The assailant then drew a .45-caliber pistol, but the kagawad, with the help of his child, managed to wrestle the weapon away. The suspect was arrested at the scene, and both loaded firearms were recovered.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspect in the second incident may face attempted murder charges. Meanwhile, investigations into both cases are ongoing as the DCPO reaffirms its commitment to pursuing accountability and justice.

These back-to-back incidents have heightened public concern about gun violence and the need for stricter measures to prevent the misuse of firearms.
