The Philippine Navy confirmed that it monitored and challenged a Chinese warship spotted “loitering” off the coast of Zambales, prompting a calibrated maritime response.
According to the Navy, the vessel was identified as a Jiangkai II–class frigate of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, bearing bow number 569. The ship was detected approximately 41 nautical miles southwest of Capones Island, within waters closely monitored by Philippine authorities.
Upon initial detection, the Philippine Navy dispatched BRP Emilio Jacinto to verify the presence and identity of the foreign warship. After confirmation, the Navy deployed BRP Diego Silang to conduct a radio challenge, a standard naval procedure used to determine a vessel’s intentions and to assert maritime awareness.
Naval officials said the operation was carried out in accordance with international maritime protocols, emphasizing the Navy’s commitment to maintaining vigilance and safeguarding the country’s maritime interests. The presence of the Chinese frigate was closely monitored throughout the encounter.
While the Philippine Navy did not immediately disclose the Chinese vessel’s declared purpose, officials noted that “loitering” behavior by foreign military ships in areas near Philippine territory is a continuing concern, particularly amid ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
The Navy reiterated that it remains prepared to respond to similar incidents, underscoring its mandate to protect national sovereignty and ensure the security of Philippine waters. Authorities also stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism and restraint while asserting the country’s rights under international law.
