The Philippine government on Monday expressed profound sorrow over the death of Pope Francis, joining millions of Roman Catholics across the world in mourning the loss of a beloved spiritual leader whose compassion and humility touched the hearts of Filipinos.
In a heartfelt statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) honored the Pope’s lasting impact on the country, recalling his unwavering commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and his deep, personal connection with the Filipino people.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs joins the Filipino people and Roman Catholics around the world in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” the statement read. “We share in this immense sorrow and remember his light, which guided us through both joy and suffering.”
Pope Francis, the first pontiff from the Global South, was revered for his gentleness, compassion, and progressive voice on the world stage. His historic 2015 apostolic visit to the Philippines remains etched in the nation’s memory — especially the emotional Mass held in the rain at Luneta, which drew an unprecedented six million faithful.
That visit, coming just over a year after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) devastated the Visayas, brought comfort and healing to countless survivors. The Pope’s presence was a symbol of God’s mercy in the midst of pain.
The DFA also reflected on Laudato si’, the Pope’s landmark encyclical that called on humanity to care for the Earth and the most vulnerable — a message that resonated deeply in a country often battered by climate-related disasters.
“For tens of millions of Filipinos, His Holiness was more than a spiritual leader — he was a beacon of hope, a voice for the voiceless, and a father to the faithful,” the DFA said. “His passing leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who found inspiration in his words and actions.”
The Vatican has yet to announce funeral details, but tributes from world leaders and religious figures have begun to pour in. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away at the age of 88.
