Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla announced that he is ready to create a fact-finding team to gather information and evidence related to the investigation into Vice President Sara Duterte’s use of confidential and intelligence funds.
The move follows the petition filed by Akbayan Partylist and Tindig Pilipinas, urging the Office of the Ombudsman to look into Duterte’s handling of public funds. Remulla confirmed that his office is monitoring the petition and that the Articles of Impeachment filed against the Vice President may be used as a reference if the investigation proceeds.
According to the Ombudsman, the letter from the opposition groups had only been submitted that morning and had yet to reach his desk. He noted that his office will act with urgency once the petition is formally received and reviewed.
Remulla clarified that the Office of the Ombudsman has no authority to remove the Vice President from office, as she is an impeachable official. Any potential case that may arise will be evaluated within the limits of his office’s mandate, with the final decision left to the proper judicial bodies.
The controversy surrounding the confidential and intelligence funds has drawn public scrutiny, particularly after congressional budget hearings raised concerns about alleged irregularities in fund transfers between the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education.
Once established, the fact-finding team will collect documents, testimonies, and other relevant materials to determine whether there is sufficient basis for administrative or criminal proceedings. The initiative underscores the Ombudsman’s intent to ensure accountability and transparency in the handling of government funds while maintaining adherence to legal processes and institutional mandates.
