QUEENS, New York — U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed community organizer Brian Romero in the race for New York State Assembly District 34, a move expected to strengthen progressive support for his campaign as the petitioning period approaches.
The endorsement adds significant momentum to Romero’s bid to succeed Assembly Member Jessica González-Rojas, who is running for State Senate. It also signals growing unity among progressive leaders, grassroots organizations, and community groups across the district.
Romero has already secured endorsements from a broad coalition that includes U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, Make the Road Action, the New York Working Families Party, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, and Assembly Members Jessica González-Rojas, Larinda Hooks, Catalina Cruz, and Steve Raga. He has also recently received the backing of Council Member Shekar Krishnan.
According to his campaign, Romero has qualified for New York State’s public matching funds program after raising more than $102,000, including estimated matching funds.
In a statement, Romero said he was honored to receive Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement, calling her a “fearless advocate for working people, immigrants, and LGBTQ New Yorkers.”
“This endorsement comes at a pivotal moment in our race,” Romero said. “It reflects the growing unity behind our campaign, as community members, progressive organizations, and elected leaders come together to deliver real results for our district.”
Romero, who grew up in the community, highlighted his background in grassroots organizing. He cited his work supporting Bangladeshi small businesses after fires, organizing relief efforts following Hurricane Ida, assisting families displaced by the 89th Street fire, and advocating for street vendors in Corona Plaza.
“I’ve never been afraid to challenge the establishment when justice demanded it,” he said. “I believe leadership means having the courage to act with urgency and compassion.”
Assembly District 34 covers parts of northwestern Queens, including Jackson Heights, Corona, and East Elmhurst, and is widely considered a progressive stronghold in New York City politics.
The petitioning period is expected to begin soon, marking the next phase of the race for the open Assembly seat.
