LEGASPI CITY - Residents in several communities surrounding Mayon Volcano experienced ash fall on Saturday afternoon following a lava flow collapse that generated a pyroclastic density current (PDC) along the volcano’s southwestern slopes.
The event occurred at approximately 5:38 PM and was captured by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Quick Response Team. According to PHIVOLCS, the PDC was produced by the collapse of advancing lava flows, sending hot gases, ash, and volcanic debris rapidly downslope.
Light to moderate ash fall was reported in nearby barangays, particularly those located southwest of the volcano. Authorities advised residents to remain indoors, wear face masks or damp cloths to protect against ash inhalation, and take precautions to safeguard water sources and livestock.
PHIVOLCS emphasized that Alert Level 3 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano, indicating increased unrest and the potential for hazardous eruptions. Entry into the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden explosive activity, lava flows, rockfalls, and pyroclastic currents.
Local government units have begun coordinating with disaster response teams to monitor affected areas and assist residents, especially those vulnerable to ash fall impacts.
Officials continue to closely monitor Mayon’s activity and urge the public to stay updated through official advisories.
